Qinghai-Tibet railway starts from Xining city and ends in Lhasa. The total length is 1956 kilometers. It passes through the main stations: Delingha, Golmud, Ando, Nagchu and Damxung. The scenic spots along the route include: Qinghai Lake, Kunlun Mountain Range, Hoh Xil, Ulan Moron, Tanggula Mountain, Qiangtang Steppe in Northern Tibet, Tso na Lake, Nyenching Tanggula Mountain, etc. The whole distance takes about 22 hours, passing through national preserve zones such as: Hol Xil, Sanjiangyuan ( three river source region), Qiangtang, etc. The entire Qinghai-Tibet Railway runs 960KM through an altitude of more than 4,000m, while Tanggula Mountain station, with an altitude of nearly 5,100m, has become the highest railway station in the world.
The attraction of the Qinghai-Tibet railway is self-evident as countless tourists come to experience the world's most visual shock every year. From the plains up to the plateau, then the scene changed, and enter into the other world, the train is driven up to the Mt. Tibet Train Travel Tips
Mainland Chinese with a citizen ID card can register in the official website of the Ministry of Railways (www.12306.cn) to buy a ticket online. So if you have a Chinese friend from mainland China, you can ask your friend to book it for you.
Foreigners can purchase train tickets on Ticket-booking websites such as Ctrip, Fliggy and Qunar. The tickets can be hard to get during the peak season for travel to Tibet, so you are suggested to book ahead of time.
Foreigners can also buy a ticket directly from the train station with a valid passport. But since the train ticket is only available 30 days or less ahead, it can be hard for you to get one during the peak season.
Foreigners can also book the train ticket through a travel agency. Our agency provides train ticket booking service. Please contact us if you need help.
If you purchase the tickets on the website of 12306 or other ticket-booking websites, you can pick up their tickets by the order number and their passport from the train station.
If you book your tickets through our agency, our staff will deliver the ticket to the city where you are going to take the train.

2. Book train tickets from Beijing to Lhasa. It's rather difficult to book Beijing-Lhasa train ticket, especially soft sleeper. The train arrives at Xining at 12:00. And from Xining on, you are able to enjoy the wonderful scenery including grassland, salt lake, Gobi, mountains and desert. At about 16:00 PM, the train arrives at Delingha station, with an altitude of 2992 meters.Delingha, which means “golden world”, is located in northern China's Qinghai province. You can get off the train and breath some fresh air there. Please wear thick clothes in case of catching cold.
At 19:00 PM, the train arrives at Golmud, where lies the famous Hoh Xil, an isolated region in the northwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The total distance from Golmud to Lhasa is 1,142 kilometers. Located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, Golmud boasts nearly 90% of its land being desert and semi-desert Gobi. There, you can have a chance to enjoy the magnificent Qarhan salt lake, Kunlun pass and Golmud poplar forest. And the train begins to provide oxygen supply.If you suffer from the high altitude sickness badly, you can use the oxygen mask beside the seat. At the last night on the train, the train will pass through Hoh Xil.
About 06:00 next morning, the train arrives at Naqu,where you can have a view of the unique scenery of the plateau: snow mountains, grassland and the dotted cattle and sheep. In another three hours, you will be arrive at Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.
Documents required: valid passport According to the real-name system, passengers must buy tickets with their own ID information. So please make sure that your documents provided to board the train conform to the ID number used for buying tickets, especially when your passports are updated.
Generally, foreign tourists cannot book tickets from the official website of the Ministry of Railways. You can book tickets through a third-party platform, such as Ctrip, or through a travel agency, which can free you from any worry.
2023 Chengdu – Lhasa Train Running Dates:
First, Lanzhou was once a strategic town on the ancient Silk Road, and it is also the starting point of the Lianyungang-Lanzhou Railway. Therefore, there are lots of routes for you to choose.
Second, it takes only 24 hours from Lanzhou to Lhasa. The journey is relatively short.You can arrive at Lhasa the second day on the train, and you won’t miss the most beautiful scenery on the Qinghai-Tibet railway.
Third, Lanzhou itself is a city worth visiting. The Yellow River, the Chinese Mother River, runs through the city, ensuring rich crops of many juicy and fragrant fruits. The city is the transportation and telecommunication center of the region. With mountains to the south and north of the city and the Yellow River flowing from the east to the west, Lanzhou is a beautiful modern city with both the grand beauty of northern cities and the prettiness of southern cities. It includes attractions such as the Five Spring Mountain Park,famous for its five springs and several Buddhist temples, the Zhongshan Bridge, the first permanent bridge over the Yellow River and Baita Mountain Park.
Therefore, departing from Lanzhou to Lhasa is indeed a great choice.
At 6178 meters above sea level, Yuzhu Peak is the main peak of the eastern section of the Kunlun Mountains. The snow-capped peaks are silvery white even in the midsummer,contributing to a famous and unique landscape - snow in June on Kunlun mountains. If you visit the viewing platform of the peak, you can have a close look at the crystal clear glaciers, which seem to be touched within an arm’s reach. It is so enchanting that you might linger there, not willing to leave. The train passes Amdo at nights and you are likely to see the stars on the sky, if the weather is fine.
When the train arrives at the Kunlun Mountain Pass, you’re entering Hoh Xil, an isolated region in the northwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in Qinghai province. You will see a highly abstract Tibetan antelope-shaped station with a sculpture of Tibetan antelope on the platform, which reminds us that the train has entered the mysterious Hoh Xil .
Hoh Xil, meaning "beautiful girl" in Mongolian, is one of the main source areas of the Yangtze River. Despite the harsh climate, Hoh Xil is home to more than 230 species of wild animals, 20 of which are under Chinese state protection, including the wild yak, wild donkey, white-lip deer, brown bear and the endangered Tibetan antelope or chiru. The train runs 200 kilometers in the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve. If you’re lucky, you may see hordes of Tibetan antelopes linger in the grasslands or riversides of the waters. On the way from Naqu to Lhasa, the train passes through the Tanggula Station, the highest station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway with an altitude of 5072 meters. To see the unstaffed station stands high on this no man’s land, you will find yourself haunted with sense of dismal .
And then you are about to enjoy the beauty of Cona Lake, a major lake of northern Tibet Autonomous Region, China.Its area is approximately 300 square kilometers, and it is at 4594 meters above sea level making it one of the world's higher freshwater lakes. Only 20 meters away from the Conahu Station, the lake can be observed on the right (west) as the train passes the station on Qingzang Railway, going south toward Lhasa. The mirror-like lake reflects the blue sky and white clouds, and the crispy bird songs are heard. Everything is so peaceful and holy.
After crossing the Lhasa River Bridge, you’re greeted with the magnificent Potala Palace on your left side.

Zhongchuan Railway: The Zhongchuan Railway is opened since the end of September 2015. you can reach Lanzhou Railway Station and Lanzhou West Railway Station from Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport in 40 minutes.
Bus: There is a bus stop on the east side of the railway station square, a coach station about 100 meters to the east of the railway station and a taxi lane on the west side. Bus No. 1, No. 6, No. 31, No. 110, No. 131, No. 181, No. 601, and K102 are docked in the east of the railway station square. No.137 stops at Pingliang Road, No.10, and No.112 stops at Tianshui Road. Buses No.7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 33, 118, 124, and 126 all pass the station.
☆Baggage check: each valid ticket can have luggage checked for once, except for that of disabled people who enjoy unlimited times. The maximum weight allowance is 50 kg. The volume cannot be larger than the luggage cart, nor smaller than 0.01 cubic meters. For articles restricted by the state, please provide the transport certificate issued by the competent authority while checking in. Valuables including money, securities, precious cultural relics, jewelry and archival materials, as well as articles that are prohibited by the state or may jeopardize trip safety shall not be carried in the luggage.
☆As the Tibet Plateau boasts a low oxygen environment, you may suffer from the high altitude sickness of varying degrees. Hence, it is recommended to have a necessary physical examination before your trip and bring some drugs according to doctor’s advice. ☆If your train needs transferring in Xining station, please transfer to another train under the guidance of the staff. ☆When the train travels from Golmud to Lhasa, it will provide you diffused and independent oxygen supply. If you have any question, please consult the conductor. During the period of oxygen supply, smoking is prohibited in the whole vehicle. ☆You ‘re supposed to rest more on the train. Please take care of your belongings. You ‘d better pay attention to the dwell time and dress yourself warmly in case of catching cold, for there’s a large temperature difference between inside and outside the vehicle.
☆Passengers getting soft sleepers can charge your devices in the compartment, while others can find sockets under the corridor seats and on both sides of the washstand. However, some of them might not work. You shall bring a Charge Pal and make sure your phone is fully charged before boarding.
