Qinghai-Tibet railway starts from Xining city and ends in Lhasa. The total length is 1956 kilometers. It passes through the main stations: Delingha, Golmud, Ando, Nagchu and Damxung.   • Can I book the same compartment for me and my companions?
    Normally you cannot choose a compartment when booking a train ticket, especially in the peak season. When we book the tickets for you, we will try our best to meet your preferences, but please be aware it is not guaranteed.
  • How can foreign tourists book train tickets themselves?
    There are four ways to book a train ticket:

    Mainland Chinese with a citizen ID card can register in the official website of the Ministry of Railways (www.12306.cn) to buy a ticket online. So if you have a Chinese friend from mainland China, you can ask your friend to book it for you.

    Foreigners can purchase train tickets on Ticket-booking websites such as Ctrip, Fliggy and Qunar. The tickets can be hard to get during the peak season for travel to Tibet, so you are suggested to book ahead of time.

    Foreigners can also buy a ticket directly from the train station with a valid passport. But since the train ticket is only available 30 days or less ahead, it can be hard for you to get one during the peak season.

    Foreigners can also book the train ticket through a travel agency. Our agency provides train ticket booking service. Please contact us if you need help.

  • Can I ask for an upper or lower berth when booking my train ticket?
    The agency normally books the train ticket for you through the website of the Ministry of Railways, which does not enable designation of the berth. You can only designate the type of the sleepers (a hard sleeper or a soft one).
  • What is the cost of the Soft Sleeper for the train from Beijing to Lhasa?
    The cost for the upper berth of the soft sleeper from Beijing to Lhasa costs RMB1144 while the lower berth costs about RMB1186. There will be 4 passengers sharing one cabin in the soft sleeper. It is suggested to choose soft sleeper (1st class of the train from Beijing to Lhasa) instead of hard sleeper due to the long duration of the train journey.     If you purchase the tickets on the website of 12306 or other ticket-booking websites, you can pick up their tickets by the order number and their passport from the train station.

  • Is there a discount for children’s train tickets?
    Children who are below 1.2 meters can take the train for free with adults. Children whose height is between 1.2 meters to 1.5 meters need to buy train tickets at a half of the price of the adults’ ones for the hard seats. Children with a child ticket will be charged the full price of the soft sleeper when using the sleeper alone.

If you visit the viewing platform of the peak, you can have a close look at the crystal clear glaciers, which seem to be touched within an arm’s reach.     When the train arrives at the Kunlun Mountain Pass, you’re entering Hoh Xil, an isolated region in the northwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in Qinghai province. You will see a highly abstract Tibetan antelope-shaped station with a sculpture of Tibetan antelope on the platform, which reminds us that the train has entered the mysterious Hoh Xil .

    Hoh Xil, meaning "beautiful girl" in Mongolian, is one of the main source areas of the Yangtze River. Despite the harsh climate, Hoh Xil is home to more than 230 species of wild animals, 20 of which are under Chinese state protection, including the wild yak, wild donkey, white-lip deer, brown bear and the endangered Tibetan antelope or chiru. The train runs 200 kilometers in the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve. If you’re lucky, you may see hordes of Tibetan antelopes linger in the grasslands or riversides of the waters. On the way from Naqu to Lhasa, the train passes through the Tanggula Station, the highest station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway with an altitude of 5072 meters. To see the unstaffed station stands high on this no man’s land, you will find yourself haunted with sense of dismal .

    And then you are about to enjoy the beauty of Cona Lake, a major lake of northern Tibet Autonomous Region, China.Its area is approximately 300 square kilometers, and it is at 4594 meters above sea level making it one of the world's higher freshwater lakes. Only 20 meters away from the Conahu Station, the lake can be observed on the right (west) as the train passes the station on Qingzang Railway, going south toward Lhasa. The mirror-like lake reflects the blue sky and white clouds, and the crispy bird songs are heard. Everything is so peaceful and holy.

    Bus: There is a bus stop on the east side of the railway station square, a coach station about 100 meters to the east of the railway station and a taxi lane on the west side. Bus No. 1, No. 6, No. 31, No. 110, No. 131, No. 181, No. 601, and K102 are docked in the east of the railway station square. No.137 stops at Pingliang Road, No.10, and No.112 stops at Tianshui Road. Buses No.7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 33, 118, 124, and 126 all pass the station.

  • Precautions on taking the train to Tibet from Shanghai?
    ☆The scanned copy of the Tibet Entry Permit is required. You are supposed to print the copy in its original size, for enlarged or reduced ones are not acceptable. As conductors check the entry permit from time to time, you’d better keep it well.

    ☆Baggage check: each valid ticket can have luggage checked for once, except for that of disabled people who enjoy unlimited times. The maximum weight allowance is 50 kg. The volume cannot be larger than the luggage cart, nor smaller than 0.01 cubic meters. For articles restricted by the state, please provide the transport certificate issued by the competent authority while checking in. Valuables including money, securities, precious cultural relics, jewelry and archival materials, as well as articles that are prohibited by the state or may jeopardize trip safety shall not be carried in the luggage.

    ☆As the Tibet Plateau boasts a low oxygen environment, you may suffer from the high altitude sickness of varying degrees. Hence, it is recommended to have a necessary physical examination before your trip and bring some drugs according to doctor’s advice. ☆If your train needs transferring in Xining station, please transfer to another train under the guidance of the staff. ☆When the train travels from Golmud to Lhasa, it will provide you diffused and independent oxygen supply. If you have any question, please consult the conductor. During the period of oxygen supply, smoking is prohibited in the whole vehicle. ☆You ‘re supposed to rest more on the train. Please take care of your belongings. You ‘d better pay attention to the dwell time and dress yourself warmly in case of catching cold, for there’s a large temperature difference between inside and outside the vehicle.
